First of the Vulva Series...

While it’s clear that societally, we’re all in need of better sexual health education and overall knowledge about our own and others’ anatomy, there appears to be the least known about the vulva. Therefore, I’ll be doing several short posts on this topic instead of one crazy long one ... my version of the vagina monologues .. rather the vulva monologues as it should more appropriately be called. .
.
As this is the first one, just some simple anatomy. The vulva is made up of several distinct parts, all of which have nerve endings for pleasure but not all of which stimulated will produce orgasm. .
.
The vulva consists of the mons which is the fleshy part that sits above the pubic bone, covered in hair (or not) depending on your preference of grooming. .
.
Next we have the outer labia or ‘lips’, which are below the mons and also covered in hair (or not).
.
.
Beneath those we have the inner labia or ‘lips’, that are hairless and surround the vaginal opening. .
.
So then of course, we have what is correctly called the vagina. The canal that is between the inner labia.
.
.
Above the vaginal opening and attached to the inner labia is the glans of the clitoris and the clitoral hood. The clitoris is much bigger than what we see, including the clitoral bulbs that internally straddle the vagina. .
.
Also invited to the vulva party is the urethra, where pee is expelled. .
.
If all this sounds confusing, that’s ok! There will be more details and explanations to come, this is only a quick anatomy overview. The best way to understand all the bits is to check out your own lady bits, if you have them! Use a mirror and explore what’s going on down there! A big challenge with women’s anatomy is that it’s not as easy to see as the external male anatomy, so one must make a concerted effort to check it out! Artwork cred : @vulva.series
