Why is Pride Called Pride?

Many people don’t know or only think that Pride is about the parade. In truth, there is a lot more activism and advocacy that are the backbone of pride.

.
.
Pride month is part of queer history where people fought (and sadly in many places are still fighting) for equal rights.

.
.
The term Pride, dates back to the Stonewall riots in 1969 and stems from the advocacy and planning of Brenda Howard, a bisexual woman, who organized the first Pride March and week of activities around it, paving the way for Pride weeks around the world. Stonewall was not a celebration but rather a revolt against oppressive laws and societal values.

.
.
Several of Howard’s colleagues helped promoted the term but it was really Sylvia Riviera, a trans woman, who solidified the term in a speech she gave after the Stonewall riots.
.
.
June didn’t officially become Pride month until 1999, under President Clinton recognition. .
.
While this isn’t much, it seems, that tells us specifically why Howard, Riviera and their compatriots chose the word Pride to represent their activism efforts, it is perhaps possible to assume that due to its oppressive roots, that standing PROUDLY in who you are regardless of societal pressures and prosecution is the most important we have to hold onto. #pride
