Sex and their "Drives"

We often think of sex as a drive like hunger, thirst or sleep. Though this isn’t entirely accurate. While not getting enough food, water or sleep will eventually lead to death, despite what some may think, not getting enough sex will not. .

@enagoski best describes it in her book Come as You Are, as more of a gas and brake model (apologies for this slightly butchered oversimplification- buy the book for the full story, it’s a great read!). The gas being desire and noticing sexual context and the brake being all the threat that might exist - stress, fatigue, hunger, illness, etc.

This being said, you might have the gas to the floor - sexual context is right, you’re interested in having sex but the brake might be to the floor as well (stress from the day is high, you’re feeling bloated from a heavy meal and you haven’t slept in days). If the brake is to the floor, you won’t get anywhere fast. The brake needs to let up before you focus on the gas.
